Making page titles Search Engine friendly for Blogger/Blogspot Blogs by interchanging Blog Title and Post Title

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for Blogger/Blogspot Blogs is a matter of challenge, since it restricts several procedures which can be easily implemented on other blogs. One such issue with Blogger blogs is their page titles of individual posts. The default page title of the blogs are as [BlogName] : [PostTitle]. But this is neither very much Search Engine Friendly nor very User Friendly. Since whenever your Blog posts appear in Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs), users don't get the title they are searching for. Search Engines show up your pages according to your post titles, but users can't see the titles if your blog name is just a bit long. This is not at all wished to be. If users are unable to see the keywords, they use to search for, in your result pages then users are not going to enter your site.

Search Engines also prioritize your pages if they get suitable titles and urls in your pages. So you should show up your pages' titles starting with the post title following with the blog name. The correct order for your pages should be [PostTitle] : [BlogName]. This can be achieved through the following code implementation.

Go to your Layout section of your blog and go to Edit HTML tab. Then find for this line:
<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>

This should be almost within the first 10 lines of your template. Now replace it with the following code.

<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>
<title><data:blog.pageName/> | <data:blog.title/></title>
<b:else/>
<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>
</b:if>

Now see your page titles will be showing up with post titles in the beginning and then followed by the Blog Name. This is something that Search Engines love and your users also. So, enjoy the extra traffic to your blog from now.

How to add noindex, nofollow in Blogroll for your Blogger/Blogspot Blogs

If you want to add a Blogroll in your Blogger Blog you can add it from your layout tab in your Blog's dashboard. You can add new page element and select the Blogroll element, where you specify the links you want to display on your Blog. You can choose the title of the section. Now if you want that Google don't share your Google Juice(PageRank value) to those sites, you can specify Google not to do that. For this you have to specify all those links to be non-recommended by adding a rel="nofollow" tag to those anchor tags.

Here is how you can do it by editing the html template of your Blog. Open the 'Edit HTML' tab in your Blogger Layout. Check the check box to Expand the widget templates. If your title for your Blogroll section is Blogroll, then find out for the following section in your template.

<b:widget id='LinkList1' locked='false' title='Blogroll' type='LinkList'>
<b:includable id='main'>
<b:if cond='data:title'><h2><data:title/></h2></b:if>
<div class='widget-content'>
<ul>
<b:loop values='data:links' var='link'>
<li><a expr:href='data:link.target'><data:link.name/></a></li>
</b:loop>
</ul>
<b:include name='quickedit'/>
</div>
</b:includable>
</b:widget>

This section of the code provides the Blogroll facility in your Blogger Blog. ow you can modify this widget to add the nofollow tag. Just insert the nofollow tag as follows.

<b:widget id='LinkList1' locked='false' title='Blogroll' type='LinkList'>
<b:includable id='main'>
<b:if cond='data:title'><h2><data:title/></h2></b:if>
<div class='widget-content'>
<ul>
<b:loop values='data:links' var='link'>
<li><a expr:href='data:link.target' rel='noindex, nofollow'><data:link.name/></a></li>
</b:loop>
</ul>
<b:include name='quickedit'/>
</div>
</b:includable>
</b:widget>

This will solve your problem and satisfy your task. You can add only the nofollow tag. I have shown you the example if you want that Google even don't index those urls, then you can add noindex tag also. Now add as many links as you wish for your visitors but not for the search engines. Enjoy Blogging.

Atom and RSS Feeds for your Blogger/Blogspot Blogs

If you have a Blog at Blogger.com i.e. yourblogname.blogspot.com and you are going to promote your Blog through the Internet, you will definitely need your Atom or RSS Feed for your Blogs. Blogger provides feeds for your blogs, but you need to know how to access them. In general the url for the feed of your blogger blog is http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default. You can checkout my Blog's default Feed at http://acmeous.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default.

But the default url for your feed provides Atom feed for your Blog. If you need the RSS 2.0 feed for your Blog, your url will be http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss. You can specify Atom feed url also as http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=atom. These urls will give you total control of your blogs' feeds and will help you to share and display anywhere. Keep promoting your blog now over the Internet.

Simplest way to change images on Mouse Over through JavaScript

Many times we use to give some effects when users mouse overs an element. Sometimes we change the colors, sometimes we change sizes. Many times we also change the images on which users put their mouses on. Many times we use to change the texts in the images which is also done by changing the whole image on mouse over. Many times we see that images remain totally same on mouse over, just the color of the image is changed, which is also done by changing the whole image.

Many times we may have used large JavaScript files to achieve this effect to change images on mouse overs. Here is the simplest way to change the images on mouse over through JavaScript. You need to assign a name for the image you want to change. Then you can use JavaScript on the properties of the image, identifying it by its name. Just using the following code, you can access the Image class of JavaScript and play with its properties. Just checkout the simplest example.

<html>
<head>
<script language="Javascript">
image1=new Image
image1.src="/images/picture1.jpg"
image2=new Image
image2.src="/images/picture2.jpg"
</script>
</head>
<body>
<a href="location1.htm" onMouseOver="document.picture.src=image2.src" onMouseOut="document.picture.src=image1.src" >
<img name="picture" src="/images/picture1.jpg" alt="My Image" />
</a>
</body>
</html>

This is a very light and easy way to do this task. Its very effective and does the job satisfactorily.

How to display html codes in your blog posts

Many times you need to show up HTML or JavaScript or PHP codes in your posts, but you don't want them to execute. You just trying to show your users how to write the code. Then you need a tip so that the codes don't get executed, but show up as it is as texts. You can do it easily through pre tags. Anything you insert within a pre tag, it is displayed as it is as texts and not executed. Here is an example of using pre tags to show html codes.

<body>
<a href="acmeous.blogspot.com" title="Acmeous Blog of Web Technology" >Acmeous</a>
</body>

Here the a tag is not executed, showing up the linked text only. You can see the actual code here. And the great thing is that it also keeps the formatting of the codes.
But one thing you have to remember while using the pre tag. You have to replace all the < with &lt; and all the > with &gt;. Otherwise you will not get the HTML codes shown up. So, now insert and show up as many codes as you want in your blog posts.

How to show a link details in status bar of the browser in JavaScript

Here is another cool trick with JavaScript. Whenever an user mouse overs a linked text or image, you use to show them a tool tip through the title text property of anchor tag. But now you can also show the details of the link in the status bar of the browser. Its very easy and light to show a short description in the browser status bar, whenever an user mouse overs the link text or image. Here is and example of using the onMouseOver and onMouseOut event handlers of JavaScript.

<a href="next.html" onMouseOver="window.status='This codes shows description in the browser status bar';return true" onMouseOut="window.status=''">LINK TEXT</a>

This code will show the text you provide for to show in the status bar of your browser whenever you will put your mouse on the linked text. This works best in Internet Explorer.

How to get the current time in JavaScript

JavaScript is very amazing scripting language through which you can do many funny things and can also satisfy useful tasks. Here is an very easy and useful use of JavaScript just to show you the use of a JavaScript's inbuilt function. You can easily show the current time in you website through JavaScript. JavaScript has an inbuilt function Date(), from which you can get the desired values. This is a good way to learn the Date() function. Checkout the example.

<html>
<head>
<script language="JavaScript">
function showTime(){
time=new Date()
document.write(time.getHours() + ":" + time.getMinutes())
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
Welcome to my Site. The time now is O’Clock.
</body>
</html>

This when seen in JavaScript enabled browser, will show up like this

Welcome to my Site. The time now is 10:30 O’Clock.

Benefits of CSS based sites over Table based sites

There are lots of benefits in creating CSS based sites than table based sites. Always you may have heard the terms like tableless designs, CSS based sites etc. But if you have always thought that why you should leave your table based designs and take upon tableless designs, then here are the explanations to your thoughts. The key benefits to CSS based sites on tabled sites are:

  • Using CSS, sites have a code reduction of around 1/5th of what it was while using tables.

  • The site's code is now fully semantic i.e it is not only understandable to human but also to machines which search engines love.

  • Using CSS, the text to code ratio is reduced up to around 40-50%, whereas using table it was around 11%.

  • Reduction in code results in fast loading of pages helping users to browse the site easily and satisfactorily. This also reduces the bandwidth consumption.

  • CSS codes are validated against XHTML Strict and AAA compliancy, ensuring consistence of the site in different platforms of operating systems and browsers.

  • Changing the way of using JavaScripts to use of CSS and HTML improved the site's crawl for search engine spiders, who cannot understand JavaScript based dynamic codes.

  • Removal of stylish flash titles and banners, with search engine friendly attractive JavaScript and CSS titles and banners.

Thus these helped users as well with fast loading and properly displaying sites, with easy understanding of content placement. This also helped search engine spiders to crawl sites and love them as well.

There are also some demerits of using CSS based sites. You have to do some cross-browser compatibility tests and fixes. But overall it gives you more control and benefits than tabled designs. So start designing CSS based HTML sites, rather than table based sites.

Adsense retiring Referral program from last week of August

Ya, you heard it right and this is what Google Adsense has to say for this.
We're constantly looking for ways to improve AdSense by developing and supporting features which drive the best monetization results for our publishers. Sometimes, this requires retiring existing features so we can focus our efforts on the ones that will be most effective in the long term. For this reason, we will be retiring the AdSense Referrals program during the last week of August.

I don't know what is the aspect of this and why it is so necessary for Google to turn it down. They had once previously announced it publically and then took it back, and opened it again for publishers targeting United States based visitors. But now they have decided to close it for everyone. Though US based site owners can take advantage of Google Affiliate Network (previously the DoubleClick Performics Affiliate Network).

They are now suggesting publishers to fill up their referral ads space with Adsense for Content in their sites. Adsense will implement this from around starting of the last week of August, from when all the Referral ads in publishers' sites will stop showing up. They are asking all publishers to generate their reports related to the referral program and save it to remember your referral campaigns.

I don't know whether they are out of resources to support that much of publishers signing up for Adsense, or they don't want to pay existing publishers for it. But they have decided to shut it down now and they will do it. Don't know how this is going to help publishers, as they say.
